McKinnons Wetlands cleanup removes over 2,100 pounds of waste
The EcoShores Sustainable Futures Network (ESFN) ‘Do It Twice’ Campaign has successfully removed 2,156 pounds of waste from the McKinnons Wetlands. This effort follows a previous collection of 462.8 pounds during the International Coastal Cleanup Day on September 19, bringing the total waste removed to 2,618.8 pounds.
More than 53 volunteers participated in the cleanup, supported by various organizations including the Antigua Cruise Port, CIBC Caribbean, the National Solid Waste Management Authority (NSWMA), and the Antigua and Barbuda Girl Guides Association, among others. The waste collected included clothing, plastic materials, car mats, and household or industrial items.
The operation revealed significant environmental challenges, as heavy items such as bed frames, mattresses, and stoves have become embedded in the wetland environment. ESFN noted that removing such large debris will require heavy-duty equipment and additional resources. The initiative highlighted the ongoing need for community action and partnerships to restore the wetlands and manage waste that has become integrated into the vegetation and soil.
