McKinnons Wetlands waste removal efforts
Overview
The EcoShores Sustainable Futures Network (ESFN) ‘Do It Twice’ Campaign removed a total of 2,618.8 pounds of waste from the McKinnons Wetlands. This total includes 2,156 pounds collected during the recent campaign and 462.8 pounds collected previously during International Coastal Cleanup Day on September 19.
More than 53 volunteers participated in the effort, supported by organizations such as the Antigua Cruise Port, CIBC Caribbean, the National Solid Waste Management Authority (NSWMA), and the Antigua and Barbuda Girl Guides Association. The collected waste consisted of clothing, plastic, car mats, and various household or industrial items.
ESFN reported that the operation revealed significant environmental challenges, noting that heavy debris like bed frames, mattresses, and stoves have become embedded in the wetland environment. The organization stated that removing such large items will require heavy-duty equipment and additional resources to address waste that has become integrated into the soil and vegetation.
