McLaren and Red Bull appeal FIA reversal of Monaco Grand Prix box‑speed penalties

The FIA annulled five‑second penalties imposed on Pierre Gasly after discovering timing errors in Monaco’s unique pit‑lane speed‑limit system, reinstating his podium finish. The correction also affected other drivers, stripping Isack Hadjar of a podium place and dropping Oscar Piastri by one position.

Following the decision, McLaren and Red Bull lodged formal notices of intent to appeal, invoking Article 15.4 of the International Sporting Code. They now have 96 hours to decide whether to launch a full appeal, while Mercedes is also reviewing possible legal steps concerning its own driver George Russell’s penalty.

Team representatives argue that the timing data supplied by Formula One Management was flawed, and that the teams had sufficient information during the weekend to anticipate such discrepancies. The dispute highlights ongoing concerns over the reliability of box‑lane speed‑limit measurements and could set a precedent for future race adjudications.
