McLaren’s 2026 F1 Performance Gap Highlighted by Chassis Issues and Development Lag

Team principal Andrea Stella said that about 70 % of McLaren’s time loss to Mercedes comes from the car’s handling in corners, with the remaining deficit on the straights caused by aerodynamic drag and power‑unit exploitation. The MCL40 is estimated to lose up to four‑tenths of a second per lap, most of it in turns, putting the British team two to three‑tenths behind the reigning champions.

Recent races have underscored the gap. At the Austrian Grand Prix Oscar Piastri finished fourth while Lando Norris dropped to seventh, and the team’s overall pace was “anonymous” compared with Mercedes, Ferrari and Red Bull. Stella stressed that closing the gap requires a rapid series of upgrades and higher development intensity, noting ongoing work with Mercedes High‑Performance Powertrains to reduce drag and improve gearbox ratios. The team acknowledges it is several months behind rivals and must deliver aerodynamic and power‑unit improvements swiftly to remain competitive in the 2026 season.
