Measles cases surge across the Americas as PAHO issues health alert

The Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) has issued an urgent alert regarding a significant surge in measles cases across the Americas, marking the highest number of confirmed cases since 2004. By July 18, 2026, the region recorded 47,459 confirmed cases, a sharp increase from the 15,011 cases reported in 2025.

Mexico is among the most heavily impacted nations. Between January and July 2026, Mexico accumulated 12,255 cases, nearly doubling the total from 2025. The outbreak has spread across 31 Mexican entities, with Jalisco recording the highest concentration of 6,603 cases. Notably, 91.6 percent of Mexican cases involved individuals with no history of vaccination. The country has also reported 17 deaths associated with the disease.

Across the Americas, 44 deaths have been documented, with Guatemala, Mexico, and the United States concentrating 95 percent of the cases. PAHO classifies the regional public health risk as ‘very high’ due to insufficient vaccination coverage and increased human movement. Health officials emphasize that achieving at least 95 percent coverage with the measles, mumps, and rubella (MMR) vaccine is essential to interrupt transmission.
