Measles cases surge in Peru's Arequipa region and Mexico's Yucatán peninsula

In Peru's Arequipa region, confirmed measles cases rose sharply from 88 to 135 within four days, a 53% increase, bringing the total to 388 suspected cases. The provincial breakdown shows 62 cases in Arequipa province, 55 in Camaná, and smaller numbers in neighboring districts. Health officials have intensified vaccination campaigns in schools and opened a dedicated triage unit at the Regional Hospital Honorio Delgado Espinoza, urging parents to ensure full immunization for their children.

Meanwhile, Mexico's Yucatán peninsula reported a 3% rise in measles cases during the latest epidemiological week, increasing from 311 to 321 total cases. Quintana Roo accounted for 267 cases, Yucatán 38, and Campeche 16. Ten new infections were confirmed, all in Quintana Roo and Campeche, with no deaths reported. Health experts linked the uptick to heightened travel and social gatherings during the summer vacation period, emphasizing the virus’s high transmissibility and the importance of vaccination.
