Mexico measles outbreak reaches 18,157 cases and 41 deaths

Mexico’s health ministry reported a cumulative total of 18,157 confirmed measles cases and 41 deaths for the 2025‑2026 outbreak. The disease has spread to all 32 federal entities and 496 municipalities. The highest numbers are in Jalisco (6,409 cases), Mexico City (981 cases) and Chiapas (833 cases). Veracruz recorded 61 cases with no fatalities.

Children under five are the most affected age group, followed by those aged 5‑9 and adults 25‑29. The ministry urged the public to complete free vaccination schedules for all ages, especially targeting children 6 months to 12 years.

Peruvian health officials also issued alerts, recommending measles vaccination for travelers attending mass‑gathering events such as Inti Raymi in Cusco and the FIFA World Cup, and for residents in high‑risk areas. The guidance emphasizes vaccinating infants, children, adolescents and adults up to age 49 who lack documented immunisation.
