Meat processing plants key to Brazil's green livestock transition

Meat processing plants are identified as essential drivers for promoting green livestock production in Brazil. According to studies released by the environmental organization Imaflora, these facilities can play a decisive role in expanding individual cattle traceability in the Amazon region.

By requiring suppliers to provide traceable cattle, processing plants can help ensure livestock does not originate from deforested areas. The research, conducted through pilot projects in the state of Pará, suggests that plants can incentivize small-scale producers to adopt sustainable practices through economic incentives, technical assistance, and shared financing.

Imaflora coordinator for Public Policy, Bruno Vello, noted that because plants concentrate the production chain, they are vital for implementing traceability and reducing uncertainty for producers.
