MED9 leaders call for Cyprus settlement and cooperation with Turkey
Leaders of the MED9, a group of nine Mediterranean EU member states, met in Split, Croatia, to address regional security, energy, and diplomatic tensions. A draft joint declaration emphasizes the need for a comprehensive settlement to the Cyprus problem within the United Nations framework, specifically citing relevant UN Security Council resolutions.
The declaration highlights the strategic importance of maintaining a stable and secure environment in the Eastern Mediterranean. Regarding Turkey, the leaders expressed a desire to develop a “mutually beneficial” relationship, provided it aligns with established European Council conclusions and conditions. The text notes that Turkey’s contribution is essential for the resumption of Cyprus negotiations.
Furthermore, the leaders called for the avoidance of unilateral actions in areas such as Varosha and along the ceasefire line to foster an environment conducive to talks. The summit also addressed broader regional instability, including conflicts in Gaza, the West Bank, Lebanon, Syria, Yemen, and the war in Ukraine.
