Medellín hospital records birth of rare quadruplets

A 39-year-old woman, Kettis María Tapia, gave birth to quadruplets at the Clínica del Prado in Medellín, Colombia. The infants, named Mariano, Maximiliano, Emiliano, and Tiago, were born on Wednesday, October 21, following the onset of labor that began around midday.

The pregnancy was considered high-risk and medically exceptional because the four fetuses shared a single placenta. Medical specialists from the Maternal Fetal Medicine Unit monitored the gestation, ultimately deciding to conclude the pregnancy at 34 weeks to mitigate risks. While a cesarean section was initially scheduled, the mother entered labor during her hospital stay.

Medical assessments suggest the quadruplets may be monozygotic, meaning they originated from a single fertilized egg and share nearly identical genetic material. This is an extremely rare occurrence in medical literature. The mother and the four newborns are reported to be in stable condition, with the infants receiving specialized care in the neonatal unit.
