Media regulators in Ghana and Nigeria urge ethical journalism

Media regulators in Ghana and Nigeria are emphasizing the importance of ethical journalism and the prevention of disinformation.

In Ghana, the National Communications Authority (NCA) Director-General, Rev. Ing. Edmund Yirenkyi Fianko, urged journalists to uphold accuracy, fairness, and accountability. Speaking at the Ghana Journalists Association’s 77th Anniversary Symposium, Fianko noted that while digital technologies and business models evolve, the public’s need for responsible information remains constant. He also highlighted the NCA's role in maintaining communications infrastructure and closing the digital divide to ensure inclusive civic participation.

In Nigeria, the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) issued a warning to broadcasters, bloggers, and online publishers against disseminating misinformation, hate speech, and inflammatory content. This directive aims to protect the integrity of the 2027 general elections. The commission emphasized the media's responsibility in shaping public perception and maintaining a peaceful information environment as political campaigning approaches, with presidential and National Assembly campaigns scheduled to begin in August 2026.
