In Ghana, government officials and international representatives have emphasized the critical role of the media in supporting democratic stability and nation-building. During the Ghana Journalists Association’s 77th Anniversary Symposium, officials described journalists as “partners in governance” whose scrutiny helps maintain transparency and expose corruption.

Chief of Staff Julius Debrah noted that journalists act as partners rather than adversaries, helping the Mahama administration maintain transparency. Deputy Government Spokesperson Shamima Muslim added that media investigations, alongside institutions like the Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ) and the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP), are vital for ensuring public officials remain answerable. While Ghana’s ranking in the 2026 Reporters Without Borders World Press Freedom Index improved to 39th globally, the Ghana Journalists Association has cautioned that press freedom remains under pressure due to ongoing threats against journalists.

More recently, the focus has shifted toward the intersection of journalism and national security. During a media capacity workshop in Accra, Cyber Security Authority Director-General Divine Selase Agbeti urged reporters to “verify before amplifying” to prevent the spread of misinformation that could trigger panic or communal tensions. National Security Coordinator COP Abdul-Osman Razak echoed this, stating that the information space is as critical to national security as a country’s borders and that journalism should expose wrongdoing without undermining the institutions it seeks to hold accountable.
