Mediacoalitie forms to counter Big Tech dominance in Netherlands
The Mediacoalitie, a newly formed group of public and private media organizations, is seeking to protect democratic values and media plurality against the dominance of global technology giants.
In the Netherlands, a handful of Big Tech companies control more than 80% of the €4 billion digital advertising market. This concentration of power impacts news distribution, app stores, and AI infrastructure. The coalition, which includes organizations such as DPG, Mediahuis, ANP, NPO, RPO, Talpa, and Follow the Money, aims to foster a collaborative media sector to counter these trends.
Supported by the Stichting Democratie en Media, the group is working with the Dutch ministries of Education, Culture and Science (OCW) and Economic Affairs and Climate Policy (EZK) to develop an integrated vision for media and digital technology. The initiative seeks to ensure transparency, privacy, and choice in an era where AI-generated content increasingly diverts traffic away from independent news sites.
