Mediaset and Atresmedia clash over Pasapalabra trademark in Spain
Spanish broadcasters Mediaset (Tele 5) and Atresmedia (Antena 3) are locked in a legal dispute over the popular game show Pasapalabra. Mediaset has filed a claim with the European Union Intellectual Property Office to assert ownership of the Pasapalabra brand, even though a Spanish court has ruled that the format belongs to Atresmedia. The conflict escalated when Atresmedia introduced a new final‑round test called “AlaZ,” purchased from a Swiss broadcaster, which Mediaset alleges closely copies the original rosco and seeks a precautionary injunction.
Both parties argue that their respective rights are protected: Mediaset claims the brand name, while Atresmedia points to compliance with the court’s decision and the legal separation of format and trademark.
