Mediaset sues Fabrizio Corona for 160 million euros

Mediaset and several prominent Italian television personalities have filed a massive civil lawsuit against Fabrizio Corona, seeking 160 million euros in damages for reputational and financial harm. The legal action stems from content broadcast during a January 26 episode of ‘Falsissimo,’ which the plaintiffs claim contained defamatory insinuations presented as absolute truths.

The plaintiffs include Mediaset executives Marina and Pier Silvio Berlusconi, as well as well-known TV figures Maria De Filippi, Silvia Toffanin, Gerry Scotti, Ilary Blasi, and Samira Lui. Mediaset has stated that if they are successful in the lawsuit, the compensation will be donated to a fund providing legal assistance to victims of stalking and cyberbullying.

In legal filings submitted to the Milan Civil Court, Mediaset’s defense team argues that Corona operates “deliberately outside of any regulated context” and is “unbound by any ethical or deontological rules.” They contend that he exploits regulatory gaps in new media to spread harmful accusations without the journalistic caution typically required by professional standards. The first hearing is scheduled for October 20 before Judge Stefania Novelli.
