Medical Association of Athens issues healthcare complaint guidelines

The Medical Association of Athens (ISA) has released comprehensive guidelines to inform citizens on how to properly submit complaints regarding medical services. The initiative aims to protect patients, ensure public health, and uphold medical professional standards.

Depending on the nature of the issue, citizens are directed to different authorities. Medical errors or unethical conduct by doctors and primary healthcare providers should be reported to local Medical Associations. Issues occurring within National Health System hospitals or health regions should be directed to those specific structures.

For legal violations by medical professionals or companies, the National Transparency Authority (EAD) is the designated body. Consumer-related issues, such as overcharging or misleading medical advertising, fall under the jurisdiction of the General Secretariat of Commerce and Consumer Protection. Tax-related misconduct should be reported to the Independent Authority for Public Revenue (AADE), while criminal activities, including the illegal practice of medicine, must be reported to the Hellenic Police or the Prosecutor's Office.

Following the death of George Mazonakis, the ISA emphasized that complaints within its specific jurisdiction must be submitted in writing and under a real name to be processed.
