Medical expert warns against excessive vitamin and supplement use

Professor Zekayi Kutlubay, Head of the Department of Dermatology and Venereal Diseases at Istanbul University Cerrahpaşa Faculty of Medicine, has issued a warning regarding the unconscious use of vitamins and dietary supplements. Speaking at a health congress in Antalya, Kutlubay cautioned that taking high doses of supplements, such as Vitamin D, Vitamin C, and collagen, to maintain youth or improve appearance can lead to poisoning and serious health issues, including liver and kidney failure.

Kutlubay emphasized that any substance, even a vitamin, can act as a poison if not taken in the correct dosage. He advised individuals to consult medical specialists rather than purchasing supplements based on hearsay or directly from pharmacies. He noted that a physician must determine specific needs based on a patient's skin, hair, nails, and overall systemic health.

Additionally, Kutlubay addressed the rise in patients seeking aesthetic procedures, warning that improper applications in unreliable centers can cause permanent damage, such as facial asymmetry. He also highlighted Turkey's significant potential in medical tourism, particularly in dermatology, noting that the country offers high-quality, affordable services compared to international standards.
