D vitamin deficiency linked to skin and hair issues in winter

Dermatology specialist Dr. Ayda Kart Aşkar warns that reduced sunlight exposure during winter months can lead to significant drops in vitamin D levels, impacting more than just bone health.

According to Dr. Aşkar, these deficiencies can exacerbate dermatological conditions. Specifically, psoriasis plaques may thicken, and redness or scaling may increase due to the loss of sunlight's natural regulatory effects. Eczema patients may experience more frequent attacks, characterized by increased dryness and itching. Additionally, vitamin D deficiency is linked to oily dandruff on the scalp and around the nose, as well as increased hair loss during seasonal transitions.

The impact extends to systemic health, including risks of decreased bone density, osteoporosis, muscle weakness, and mood fluctuations such as depression or anxiety. To maintain healthy levels, experts recommend controlled sun exposure and proper nutrition.
