Medical experts call for increased HIV testing awareness for women

Medical experts are calling for increased awareness regarding HIV testing for women, noting that they are often diagnosed much later than other high-risk groups. Dr. Katharina Grabmeier-Pfistershammer and Andrea Brunner, head of Aids-Hilfe-Wien, observed that healthcare providers are more likely to proactively suggest testing to men who have sex with men or people who use drugs.

Currently, many women only receive a diagnosis after becoming ill or after a partner tests positive. While pregnancy screenings via the 'parent-child pass' detect approximately one-quarter of HIV-positive women before symptoms appear, those outside of this reproductive phase face a significantly lower probability of being offered a test.

Experts also highlighted the difficulty of reaching specific high-risk groups, such as women from Sub-Saharan Africa, due to higher levels of social stigma. Efforts to improve prevention and information dissemination in Austria include working with community leaders and religious figures to provide accessible information in multiple languages.
