Medical experts criticize Channel 4 ADHD documentary
A Channel 4 documentary titled ‘The Great ADHD Myth?’ has drawn sharp criticism from medical experts for potentially increasing stigma and skepticism regarding Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD).
In the program, presenter and NHS psychiatrist Dr. Max Pemberton suggested that ADHD is a “social construct” rather than a brain disorder, arguing that schools should adapt to children rather than using medication to fit them into norms.
Dr. Michelle Hill of ADHD Ireland argued that the program ignores mainstream science, which recognizes ADHD as a well-evidenced neurodevelopmental disability. She warned that the documentary risks delegitimizing those living with the condition.
Additionally, Katya Rubia, a professor of cognitive neuroscience at King’s College London, withdrew her support for the program, accusing producers of cherry-picking and misrepresenting her views to fit a specific narrative. Rubia expressed concern that such programming could encourage parents to discontinue necessary medication, potentially leading to increased risks of anxiety, depression, substance abuse, and suicide.
