Medical experts rename PCOS to Polyendocrine Metabolic Ovarian Syndrome
Medical experts have reached a consensus to rename Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) to Polyendocrine Metabolic Ovarian Syndrome (PMOS). This change aims to more accurately reflect the condition as a complex, multisystem endocrine and metabolic disorder rather than an issue isolated to the ovaries.
The previous terminology was considered misleading, as it focused on the presence of small follicles rather than dangerous cysts and often led clinicians to overlook the broader systemic impacts. PMOS is driven largely by insulin resistance and can affect blood sugar regulation, energy levels, mood, and long-term heart health.
While the condition is frequently associated with infertility and irregular menstrual cycles, experts emphasize that a diagnosis is not a sentence of infertility. Many women can restore ovulation through medical treatment. Global health leaders are now calling for increased research into PMOS subtypes, noting that prevalence rates among adolescents and young women are projected to rise significantly by 2036.
