Medical researchers identify new treatment pathways for aggressive blood cancers
Recent medical studies have identified new pathways for treating aggressive forms of blood cancer. Researchers analyzing outcomes for hepatosplenic T-cell lymphoma, a rare and highly aggressive cancer, found that allogeneic haematopoietic stem cell transplantation—using donor cells—offers a significant chance for long-term survival. In a study of 121 patients across Europe and Asia, 55% of those receiving donor transplants were still alive three years later, with 50.5% remaining in remission.
In a separate development, scientists from The Institute of Cancer Research and The University of Edinburgh have identified a new drug target for acute myeloid leukaemia (AML). By blocking the TUT4/7 enzymes, which modify RNA, researchers were able to halt the growth of AML cells in laboratory settings and improve survival rates in mice. The study, published in Science Advances, suggests that inhibiting these specific enzymes could allow for more effective treatment with fewer side effects on healthy blood cell production. Combining this approach with existing drugs like venetoclax showed increased efficacy in killing cancer cells.
