Medical researchers test laser therapy and mRNA nanoparticles for cancer treatment

Researchers are advancing new methods to treat cancer through laser therapy and mRNA nanotechnology.

A Phase 1 clinical study conducted at UCI Health Chao Family Comprehensive Cancer Center and City of Hope in the United States is testing vascular photodynamic therapy (VTP) using padeliporfin. This experimental technique aims to make inoperable pancreatic tumors surgically removable by injecting a light-sensitive drug and using a laser to destroy the tumor area. In initial tests involving six patients, four were subsequently able to undergo surgery.

Separately, researchers at the University of Adelaide in Australia have developed a strategy using mRNA-directed lipid nanoparticles to reconfigure tumor-associated macrophages (TAMs). By targeting the TREM2 protein, the nanoparticles deliver components that transform immunosuppressive macrophages into active cells that attract cancer-fighting T cells. In mouse models, this approach reduced immunosuppressive macrophages by over 60% and increased CXCL9 levels, enhancing the immune system's ability to penetrate and attack tumors.
