Medical societies release new universal myocardial infarction guidelines

The fifth edition of the Universal Definition of Myocardial Infarction has been released, introducing new criteria to improve the precision of heart attack diagnosis and treatment. Published jointly by the European Society of Cardiology (ESC), the American College of Cardiology (ACC), the American Heart Association (AHA), and the World Heart Federation (WHF), the guidelines aim to reduce diagnostic errors by moving away from isolated symptoms and exams toward an integrated analysis of cardiac injury mechanisms.

The new framework simplifies the previous five-type classification into three primary groups. The first category, primary infarction, occurs when coronary arteries are directly affected by issues such as atherosclerotic plaque rupture, spontaneous coronary artery dissection, embolisms, or vasospasms. The second category, secondary infarction, involves cardiac injury caused by other underlying diseases that disrupt heart stability rather than direct coronary artery issues.
