Dominican Republic advocates call for urgent mental health action

Various organizations and specialists in the Dominican Republic are calling for increased attention to mental health, emphasizing the need for systemic action rather than treating emotional struggles as isolated incidents.

In Santo Domingo, the community Madres Todo Terreno, led by Keidy Peña, organized the “Ponle Freno a la Ansiedad” event. Participants highlighted the rising cases of anxiety, depression, and emotional exhaustion, particularly noting the increase in postpartum depression among adolescents. Experts urged authorities to implement stronger educational and preventive measures.

Simultaneously, the National Health Service (SNS) held a walk titled “Unidos por la salud mental” to reduce the stigma associated with seeking professional help. SNS Executive Director Julio César Landrón stated that “recognizing that we need help is an act of bravery.” The institution reported expanding its mental health capacity, increasing from 137 beds in 2020 to a projected 450 beds by 2026.

In a separate forum, “De adentro hacia afuera,” medical specialists addressed female well-being, focusing on the intersection of emotional health, self-care, and the impact of stress on physical appearance. In Santiago, community walks also promoted empathy and the importance of creating inclusive spaces for those facing psychological challenges.
