Mental health and wellness seminars in Latin America
Overview
Medical and psychological specialists have conducted various seminars and forums focused on emotional well-being and specialized health challenges across Latin America. In Argentina, psychosocial support sessions were organized for oncology patients and their families.
In the Dominican Republic, recent advocacy has transitioned toward systemic national action. Following community-led efforts like the ‘Ponle Freno a la Ansiedad’ event—which highlighted rising rates of anxiety, depression, and postpartum depression among adolescents—and the National Health Service (SNS) ‘Unidos por la salud mental’ walk, the government has launched a formal national communication campaign.
Led by Minister of Public Health Dr. Víctor Atallah, the campaign titled ‘¿Cómo estás realmente?’ (How are you really?) uses the slogan ‘Habla, sana y vive’ (Speak, heal, and live). The initiative aims to reduce social stigma and encourage empathetic listening by deploying audiovisual spots, educational talks, and digital content. To provide immediate support, the Ministry highlighted a free helpline, 711, for professional guidance. Dr. Atallah emphasized that mental health is an ‘indispensable part of integral well-being’ and urged citizens to treat mental health conditions with the same naturalness as any other medical specialty.
These efforts complement previous initiatives in Santo Domingo and Santiago, such as the ‘De adentro hacia afuera’ forum, which focused on female well-being and the connection between stress and physical health.
