Honduras and Dominican Republic face healthcare disruptions amid medical strikes

Medical professionals in Honduras and the Dominican Republic are engaged in significant labor disputes, causing widespread disruptions to public health services.

In Honduras, the Colegio Médico de Honduras (CMH) has maintained informative assemblies since early September 2026. These actions have resulted in the postponement of over 27,000 medical appointments and the cancellation of thousands of elective surgeries. The government claims to have paid 97% of interim staff, but medical representatives continue to demand unpaid wages and contract regularizations. Additionally, health officials revealed the discovery of approximately 700 ghost positions within the sector.

In the Dominican Republic, the Colegio Médico Dominicano (CMD) recently conducted a 24-hour national strike on October 13. The strike, which suspended external consultations and elective procedures, was driven by demands for increased pay, hospital repairs, and the settlement of a RD$27 million debt owed by INTRANT. The CMD has indicated it will wait for a formal meeting with President Luis Abinader upon his return from Europe before deciding on further protest actions.
