Medical Student Pham Tuan Hung Rescues Drowning Tourist at Hai Hoạ Beach, Vietnam

On 29 July, Pham Tuan Hung, a second‑year medical student at the University of Medicine and Pharmacy, Vietnam National University, Hanoi, was vacationing with his family at Hai Hoạ beach in Thanh Hóa province. He observed a man who had drowned and was being attended to by police and bystanders. Noting that the initial cardiopulmonary‑resuscitation (CPR) technique was incorrect, Hung stepped in, directed a bystander to provide artificial respiration and performed chest compressions himself. After several minutes of coordinated effort, the victim began coughing up water, regained breathing and consciousness, and was later taken to Nghe Son General Hospital for further treatment. Hung, who had previously practiced CPR only on models, described the experience as a valuable lesson in staying calm and applying his training in a real emergency.

The incident highlights the importance of proper first‑aid training and quick response in rescue situations, especially for future healthcare professionals.
