Medical teams in Vietnam perform complex surgeries for cancer and rare tumors

Medical professionals in Vietnam have successfully performed complex surgeries on two patients presenting with severe gastrointestinal and urinary symptoms.

At Viet Duc University Hospital in Hanoi, a 51-year-old man underwent a total bladder removal after being diagnosed with late-stage bladder cancer. The patient had experienced prolonged hematuria but delayed medical consultation. Doctors discovered a 7cm tumor that had deeply invaded the bladder muscle wall, making conservative treatment impossible. The surgical team, led by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Do Truong Thanh, performed the removal and reconstructed the urinary tract using the intestine.

Separately, at Nghe An General Friendship Hospital, surgeons treated a 66-year-old man suffering from critical gastrointestinal bleeding, including vomiting fresh blood and passing black stools. Imaging revealed a rare Gastrointestinal Stromal Tumor (GIST) measuring 81x70 mm located at the D4 segment of the duodenum. Dr. Nguyen Van Thuy noted that GIST in this specific anatomical location is exceptionally rare. The surgical team successfully removed the tumor and re-established digestive flow through a D2 duodenojejunal anastomosis.
