Medieval festivals draw visitors to Valença and Castro Marim

Historical reenactment festivals are drawing significant crowds to heritage sites in the Iberian Peninsula. In Valença, the Fortress is hosting a three-day event recreating life from the 16th century. The program includes a medieval market, artisan demonstrations, gastronomy, and theatrical performances. This year’s edition highlights the historical legacy of Duarte de Armas, an esquire of King Manuel I, who traveled through border fortresses in 1509.

In Castro Marim, the 27th edition of the Medieval Days saw a substantial increase in visitors. Set against the backdrop of the Castle of Castro Marim and the Fort of San Sebastián, the five-day event featured knights, musicians, and craftsmen. The opening ceremony included the participation of the Minister of Culture, Youth, and Sport, Margarida Balseiro Lopes. The municipality emphasized safety and infrastructure investments to accommodate the growing number of domestic and international tourists.
