Mediterranean Corridor: Calls for dedicated freight lines in Murcia

The Mediterranean Corridor is evolving into a strategic lever for Spanish competitiveness and European connectivity. The corridor is vital to the national economy, as the Mediterranean arc handles 50% of Spain's land goods, 50% of its industrial production, and generates 45% of its GDP.

In the Region of Murcia, the People's Party (PP) has called on the Spanish government to implement a dedicated freight railway line to connect the region with the Mediterranean Corridor. Senator José Ramón Díez de Revenga warned that the current Ministry of Transport design, which may require passenger and freight services to share a single platform, could create a “bottleneck” for goods exiting toward Europe.

This infrastructure is considered essential for the efficient, sustainable, and decarbonized transport of products from areas such as the Campo de Cartagena and the Port of Cartagena. Proponents argue that a specialized network is necessary to support the projected volume of traffic and ensure regional economic and logistical growth.
