Mediterranean Corridor rail closure planned for 2027

The Spanish Government has announced a planned railway closure of the Mediterranean Corridor between Castelló and Tarragona, expected to last five to six months in mid-2027. Joan Calabuig, the commissioner for coordinating the Mediterranean Corridor, stated that the interruption is necessary to implement the international gauge, the European standard for rail separation.

During the works, passenger services will be replaced by buses. Freight traffic will be diverted through an alternative route via Teruel and Zaragoza to Barcelona. To facilitate this, infrastructure improvements including the adaptation of tunnels and viaducts are being carried out between Sagunt, Teruel, and Zaragoza to accommodate larger convoys.
