Mediterranean Games 2026: Algeria squad announced and Hafnaoui withdraws

Preparations for the 2026 Mediterranean Games in Taranto, Italy, involve significant developments for North African athletes. The Algerian Football Federation has announced its 18-player U21 squad, led by coach Brahim Hemdani. The team is placed in Group B and is scheduled to face Kosovo on August 22, Italy on August 24, and Albania on August 26.

In swimming, Tunisian Olympic champion Ahmed Ayoub Hafnaoui has withdrawn from the competition. Following a meeting between the Tunisian Swimming Federation, the Ministry of Youth and Sports, and the athlete's representatives, medical professionals confirmed that Hafnaoui is currently unable to compete due to both physical and psychological reasons. The decision highlights the importance of mental health and recovery for high-level athletes.
