Taranto 2026 Mediterranean Games begin with Italy leading medal count

The 20th Mediterranean Games in Taranto, Italy, have officially commenced, featuring over 4,500 athletes from 26 nations. Italy has established an early lead in the medal standings, securing 54 medals within the first three days, driven largely by dominant performances in cycling and swimming. In cycling, Italy achieved a historic sweep in the women’s road race, with Rachele Barbieri taking gold, followed by Martina Fidanza and Barbara Guarischi.

In swimming, Greece has shown strong presence with multiple athletes qualifying for finals, including Apostolos Christou and Evangelos Makrygiannis in the men’s 50m backstroke. Other regional competitors, including Serbia and Croatia, have also secured early medals in combat sports such as taekwondo and wrestling.

Syria has also made its mark, with wrestler Ibrahim Al-Tabaa securing a bronze medal in the 57kg category. Meanwhile, Elena Voltan earned a gold medal for Italy in canoeing. The event, which includes various disciplines such as boxing, handball, and bocce, continues to see intense competition across multiple venues in the Taranto region.
