Mediterranean Posidonia sea balls harbor microplastics; seeds remove over 98% from drinking water

In the Mediterranean, spheres formed by the seagrass Posidonia oceanica, commonly found on beaches, were shown to harbor microplastics, with more than a third of the balls contaminated by plastic. The finding highlights ongoing marine pollution linked to microplastics in coastal ecosystems. In a separate study published in ACS Omega, seeds from a tropical plant are reported to remove more than 98% of microplastics from potable water, at a cost of under €5, suggesting a low-cost approach to reducing microplastic contamination in drinking water.
