Wildfires in Italy have burned roughly 70,000 hectares this year, a 133 % rise over the two‑decade average, according to a WWF report. The burned area is comparable to about 100,000 football fields, and nearly one‑third of the fires occurred in protected zones.

Across Europe, the same season has seen about 435,000 hectares destroyed, with Spain suffering 219,000 hectares and France 91,000 hectares of loss. In Italy, more than 300,000 residents have been temporarily evacuated and dozens injured.

WWF warns that the fires are becoming a “new normal” driven by climate change and insufficient forest‑land management, calling for preventive measures beyond emergency firefighting. The heat wave that accompanies the blazes has triggered a national red‑alert, water shortages, and impacts on agriculture and livestock.
