Assam and Meghalaya coordinate to restore order after Shillong violence
Following violent unrest in Shillong on August 19, the governments of Assam and Meghalaya have initiated joint measures to restore normalcy and ensure safe interstate transit. The violence, which occurred during a black-flag motorcycle rally organized by the Khasi Students’ Union (KSU), involved stone-pelting, arson, and attacks on vehicles, particularly those registered in Assam. The incident resulted in 16 injuries and damage to approximately 31 vehicles.
Meghalaya Deputy Chief Minister Sniawbhalang Dhar confirmed that the state has formed a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to prosecute those responsible and has already arrested three senior KSU leaders. Authorities have also identified five masked individuals allegedly involved in the attacks. To facilitate the safe return of stranded travelers, the two states have agreed to establish dedicated helplines, a coordination mechanism between senior police officials, and permanent district-level committees.
Despite these efforts, tensions remain high. The Northeast Petroleum Mazdoor Union (NEPMZ) has threatened to suspend the transport of petroleum products from Assam to Meghalaya due to safety concerns. Additionally, some taxi associations have implemented blockades at border entry points, disrupting the Guwahati-Shillong corridor and affecting the local tourism industry.
