Meghalaya Assembly Speaker disqualifies three MLAs
Meghalaya Assembly Speaker Thomas A. Sangma has disqualified three legislators from the United Democratic Party (UDP) following their decision to join the National People’s Party (NPP). The disqualified members include Paul Lyngdoh, Renikton Lyngdoh Tongkhar, and Nujorki Sungoh.
The Speaker’s decision was based on Paragraph 4 of the Tenth Schedule of the Indian Constitution. According to the Assembly Secretariat, the legislators expressed their intent to join the NPP on October 17, which the Speaker ruled as a violation of constitutional provisions regarding party switching.
This move follows a previous shift on October 16, when eight UDP legislators joined the BJP. As a result of these transitions, the UDP legislature party is left with only one remaining member, Metbah Lyngdoh.
