The BJP has reportedly given a verbal nod to most of these requests.

Internal friction within the UDP has been acknowledged by senior leader Paul Lyngdoh, who cited frustration over a lack of direction and the marginalization of UDP ministers within the ruling Meghalaya Democratic Alliance-II (MDA-II) government. Lyngdoh has since warned that the party is in a ‘tailspin,’ noting that a significant number of its MLAs have established direct links with BJP national leadership.

In response to the ongoing rumors, the UDP has scheduled an emergency meeting of its central executive committee. UDP General Secretary Titosstarwell Chyne stated that while the party has received no official communication regarding defections, leadership is addressing the rumors. Chyne noted that he has spoken with the MLAs in question via telephone, though they have not provided clear indications of their intent to leave. Meanwhile, BJP MLA AL Hek expressed confidence in the party’s ability to form its own government, claiming the BJP is positioning itself to emerge as a ‘strong, independent political force’ in the state.
