Meghalaya government and KSU reach tentative peace after unrest
Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma and the Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) have entered a period of tentative peace following a week of political unrest and violence. After a high-level meeting at the state secretariat, the KSU has agreed to temporarily suspend its agitation, though leaders emphasized that the suspension is conditional upon the actual implementation of government promises.
A central point of contention is the proposed Shree Cement project in East Jaintia Hills. Following concerns over the legitimacy of public hearings and environmental impacts, the government has ordered a fact-finding committee, led by an independent official, to investigate. Construction on the project will remain on status quo until the committee's findings are released.
The discussions also addressed several other KSU demands, including the implementation of the Meghalaya Residents Safety and Security Act (MRSSA), stricter enforcement of the Migrant Workers Act 2020, and recruitment reforms at NEIGRIHMS. The government has committed to expediting work on facilitation centres and strengthening migrant worker verification processes.
Separately, the Meghalaya High Court has demanded a status report and case diary from the state government regarding the violence that occurred during a KSU bike rally on August 19. The unrest resulted in the arrest of several KSU leaders and damage to vehicles, including those belonging to the High Court. Additionally, the Chief Minister reported that 72 illegal coke plants have been demolished since 2023 to ensure environmental compliance.
