Meghalaya CM launches mobile medical units for 93 villages

Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma has launched three Mobile Medical Units (MMUs) in Shillong to expand primary healthcare access to remote communities. Supported by Altius under its CSR initiative and implemented by the Apollo Foundation – Total Health, the units are designed to serve approximately 93 villages across the Mawpat, Pynursla, and Baghmara regions.

The initiative is expected to reach a combined population of over 200,000 people. Each unit will be staffed by doctors and trained medical personnel, equipped with essential medicines, diagnostic tools, and technology-enabled electronic medical record services. The teams will provide consultations, basic diagnostics, and follow-up care, while facilitating referrals to specialized facilities when necessary.

A primary focus of the program is the prevention, screening, and management of non-communicable diseases, alongside targeted interventions such as cancer screening and vision health services. Sangma emphasized that the success of the program should be measured by its ability to save lives and reach the needy rather than the launch itself.
