Meghalaya healthcare infrastructure expansion
Overview
The state of Meghalaya is implementing a multi-pronged expansion of its primary healthcare infrastructure and services. The government has set a target to reach 700 Sub Centres by March 2027, supported by an investment of approximately Rs 750 crore in health infrastructure over the last five years. This expansion aims to increase the state’s hospital bed capacity by more than 600 beds.
Recent data indicates that these efforts have coincided with improved health outcomes, including a 40 percent decline in infant deaths and a 57 percent decline in maternal deaths between 2020-21 and 2025-26. Institutional deliveries have also risen to 79 percent.
To complement fixed infrastructure, Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma has launched three Mobile Medical Units (MMUs) to serve approximately 93 villages in the Mawpat, Pynursla, and Baghmara regions. These units, supported by Altius and the Apollo Foundation – Total Health, are designed to reach over 200,000 people, providing consultations, diagnostics, and management of non-communicable diseases to remote communities.
