Meghalaya political stability questioned amid potential UDP-BJP shift

Political stability in Meghalaya is under scrutiny following reports that several United Democratic Party (UDP) legislators may join the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). Cabinet Minister Lahkmen Rymbui described the potential shift as a “probability,” noting that while the UDP remains united, individual MLAs must make decisions based on their constituencies.

In contrast, National People's Party (NPP) State President and Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong dismissed concerns regarding government instability. Tynsong asserted that the NPP holds 33 seats, which is sufficient to maintain a majority and complete a full term independently of the UDP. He suggested that rumors of a realignment might stem from internal UDP friction rather than a threat to the Meghalaya Democratic Alliance (MDA) government.

Separately, the Meghalaya government has asked Advocate General Amit Kumar to step away from state cases for two weeks. This move aims to address grievances raised by the Bar Association during an ongoing legal agitation, allowing the government time to examine the issues before a Cabinet decision is made.
