Meghalaya faces lawyer protests and government talks with KSU

Meghalaya is experiencing several points of political and social tension. Lawyers from across the state, led by the High Court of Meghalaya Bar Association, have staged protests and burned an effigy of Advocate General Amit Kumar. They are demanding his removal following remarks he made regarding the safety of women in the Bar and his conduct during a case involving a molestation allegation. The protests intensified after Chief Minister Conrad Sangma expressed support for the Advocate General.

In a separate development, the Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) held talks with the state government. The meeting resulted in the government agreeing to form an independent fact-finding committee regarding a proposed Shree Cement plant in East Jaintia Hills and to expedite the registration of non-residents under the Meghalaya Residents Safety and Security Act. The KSU has temporarily suspended its agitation following these discussions.

Additionally, the state Assembly addressed food safety and agricultural concerns. The Food Safety Department reported conducting 3,726 inspections over three years, clarifying that a recent ban on Sting energy drink was lifted after no link was found between the product and a child's death. Meanwhile, the government is implementing measures to monitor fertilizer distribution to prevent black-market activity and overcharging.
