Meghalaya political shifts as UDP faces potential MLA defections to BJP

The political landscape in Meghalaya is facing significant shifts as the United Democratic Party (UDP) prepares for an emergency meeting of its central executive committee. The meeting follows reports that eight to nine of its MLAs may defect to join the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

UDP General Secretary Titosstarwell Chyne stated that while the party has received no official communication regarding defections, the leadership is addressing the rumors. Chyne noted that he has spoken with the MLAs in question via telephone, but they have not provided clear indications of their intent to leave. He emphasized that grievances should be handled through internal party channels rather than the media.

Concurrently, BJP MLA AL Hek expressed confidence in the party’s ability to form its own government in the state. Following a meeting with Union Home Minister Amit Shah in Delhi, Hek claimed that the political scenario is changing and that the BJP is positioning itself to emerge as a strong, independent political force in Meghalaya.
