Meghalaya UDP faces crisis as MLAs prepare to join BJP
The United Democratic Party (UDP) in Meghalaya is facing a significant political crisis as several of its MLAs prepare to join the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). BJP MLA AL Hek stated that leaders from all 12 districts of the state are seeking to join the party, noting that discussions have already taken place with Home Minister Amit Shah regarding forming a government in Meghalaya for the 2028 elections.
While the final decision on the defecting MLAs rests with the BJP leadership in Delhi, Hek emphasized that the movement represents the will of the people of Meghalaya. Meanwhile, UDP MLA Paul Lyngdoh described the situation as an existential crisis for the party, suggesting it is too late for course correction. Lyngdoh, who is currently weighing options between the BJP and the National People's Party (NPP), noted that the party has suffered from a leadership vacuum following the departure of several key figures and alliance partners.
