Ghana partners with Meiji Holdings on cocoa and sports nutrition

Ghana is pursuing a multi-sector strategy to enhance economic value through partnerships with Japanese entities. In the cocoa industry, the government has signed a Letter of Intent with Meiji Holdings Co. Ltd. to promote sustainable development and a circular economy. This agreement aims to transition Ghana from a raw bean exporter to a value-addition hub, focusing on domestic processing, environmental protection, and farmer welfare.

Parallel to these agricultural efforts, the Ghana Football Association (GFA) has entered into a Memorandum of Understanding with Meiji Holdings to explore a long-term partnership. This collaboration focuses on sports nutrition, player performance, and football development. Meiji has provided an initial support package including SAVAS sports nutrition supplements and protein products, with discussions continuing to explore market penetration for these products through the popularity of Ghanaian football.

Regarding industrial targets, Ghana aims to increase local cocoa bean processing to at least 50% starting from the 2026/27 season, up from current levels of approximately 30% to 40%.
