Mejillones Port Complex seeks to expand trade links with Bolivia

The Mejillones Port Complex (CPM) in northern Chile is seeking to strengthen its role in Bolivian foreign trade by establishing new logistical connections. Juan Alberto Ruiz, General Manager of CPM, recently visited Santa Cruz de la Sierra to present the port's capabilities to Bolivian business leaders and the Bolivia-Chile Binational Business Council.

Currently, approximately 75% of Bolivian cargo in transit through Chile passes through the port of Arica, according to the Bolivian Port Services Administration (ASP-B). Ruiz emphasized the importance of diversification to mitigate risks associated with over-reliance on a single port. He highlighted that Mejillones offers nine specialized and multipurpose terminals, along with established road and rail connectivity that is already operational.

Bolivia is looking to diversify its international market access routes to support the growth of its mining sector in the west and the expansion of agro-industrial activities in the east, particularly in Santa Cruz. CPM is positioning itself as a strategic alternative through infrastructure expansion projects designed to meet the specific needs of Bolivian exporters.
