Chile-Bolivia maritime logistics integration

Overview

Efforts to strengthen logistical integration between Chile and Bolivia have progressed through both infrastructure expansion proposals and formal institutional agreements.

In late September 2026, the Mejillones Port Complex (CPM) in northern Chile initiated outreach to Bolivian business leaders and the Bolivia-Chile Binational Business Council. CPM management presented the port as a strategic alternative to the port of Arica, which currently handles approximately 75% of Bolivian transit cargo. The goal is to provide diversification for Bolivia’s mining and agro-industrial sectors through CPM’s specialized terminals and existing rail and road connectivity.

Following these developments, the Empresa Portuaria Arica (EPA) and the Puerto Seco de Oruro signed a collaboration agreement to optimize the supply chain. This partnership focuses on improving cargo transfer times, facilitating customs procedures, and exchanging operational information to reduce border wait times. The agreement also aims to attract global shipping lines to the Oruro Dry Port to enhance multimodal transport services for Bolivian exports.
