Ceuta President Vivas demands EU response to migration crisis
Ceuta President Juan Jesús Vivas has traveled to Brussels to demand a decisive response from the European Union following the mass migration crisis in July. Vivas accused Morocco of playing a decisive role, through action or omission, in the influx of thousands of migrants into the Spanish enclave. He cited police reports suggesting Moroccan agents guided individuals toward the border and argued it is impossible for 80,000 people to move without the knowledge of Moroccan authorities.
Vivas is calling for the EU to recognize a special status for Ceuta and Melilla due to their unique position as European land borders in Africa. He also requested a permanent EU presence through Frontex and the European Asylum Agency to ensure border security.
In response to the crisis, Interior Minister Fernando Grande-Marlaska stated that the single command established to manage the situation in Ceuta will not be renewed after December 31. Meanwhile, Melilla President Juan José Imbroda has called for clear security protocols and legislative changes to address the specific needs of the autonomous cities. The Spanish central government has maintained that Morocco is not responsible for the influx, pointing instead to traffickers and misinformation.
